Author Guidelines

ICAIOS: Journal of Malay World and Indian Ocean Studies welcomes original research articles, review papers, and conceptual essays related to the Malay World and Indian Ocean studies. All submissions must comply with the following guidelines:

1. General Requirements
  • Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere.
  • All manuscripts must be written in clear and concise academic English.
  • Submissions must be made through the online journal system. The journal does not accept submissions via email.
2. Manuscript Structure

Articles should generally follow the IMRaD format (Introduction, Methodology, Results, and Discussion), unless the article is conceptual or a review paper. Each manuscript should contain:

  • Title: Concise and informative, no more than 16 words.
  • Abstract: 150–250 words, written in English, summarizing the objectives, methods, main findings, and conclusions.
  • Keywords: 4–6 keywords that reflect the core content of the article.
  • Introduction: Background, research questions, objectives, and relevance of the study.
  • Methodology: Research design, data sources, methods of data collection and analysis.
  • Results and Discussion: Findings supported by evidence, comparisons with previous studies, and theoretical implications.
  • Conclusion: Summary of key findings, limitations, and suggestions for future research.
  • References: Full list of sources cited, using APA 7th edition citation style.
3. Formatting Guidelines
  • Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).
  • Length: 6,000–8,000 words (excluding references and appendices).
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced.
  • Margins: 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides.
  • Pages must be numbered consecutively.
4. Citation and References
  • Use APA 7th edition for in-text citations and reference list.
  • Only include references cited in the manuscript.
  • Ensure at least 50% of references are from the last 5 years and from reputable, peer-reviewed sources.
5. Authorship and Ethical Statement
  • All listed authors must have made substantial contributions to the manuscript.
  • Authors must disclose any conflicts of interest.
  • Research involving human subjects must include ethical clearance and informed consent statements.
6. Review and Revision Process

All manuscripts will undergo a double-blind peer review. Authors are expected to respond to reviewer comments and revise accordingly within the specified time.

7. Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright and publish under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0).
